# What is video AEO for software companies?

By Jeel Patel, Founder, FoxCue · Published 2026-10-21 · Updated 2026-10-21

Video AEO (answer engine optimization) for software companies is the practice of structuring product demos, tutorials and help-center walkthroughs so AI answer engines can find, parse and cite them. Video SEO chases a ranking or a click. Video AEO aims to get the video quoted inside the answer, usually from a YouTube transcript, chapters and metadata.

## How is video AEO different from video SEO?

The win is different. Video SEO tries to rank the video and earn the click. Video AEO tries to get the video, or the brand behind it, cited inside the answer itself. Vimeo describes that shift as moving from a top ranking to being cited as often as possible[^1].

| | Video SEO | Video AEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Goal | Rank the video and earn the click | Get cited inside the AI answer |
| You measure | Position, views and clicks | Citations for your questions |
| You tune | The video page and its ranking | Transcript, chapters and metadata |

A clear title helps both. Vimeo calls the job being citable, not going viral[^1]. Citations change from one refresh to the next, so the spoken answer matters more than any single URL.

## Which videos should you make first?

Start with utility, not a brand film. Answer one concrete question. Vimeo argues the help center is the raw material: one video per question, with a title, chapters and a description[^1].

1. Help-center walkthroughs for the setup questions support hears most
2. Tutorials for the how-do-I tasks that already show up in search
3. A product demo of one core workflow, end to end
4. A comparison that explains fit by use case

Utility is not a Short. 94% of cited YouTube videos were long-form, and Shorts were 5.7%[^2]. The raw material is usually already in your docs. It has not been spoken yet.

| Share of AI-cited YouTube videos | Share |
| --- | --- |
| Long-form | 94% |
| Shorts | 5.7% |

## How do AI engines read a software video?

They read text, not the frames. Vimeo says models don't watch a video the way a person does: they parse the title, description, comments and metadata, and transcript parsing is still to come[^1]. Amsive is less cautious: a transcript, chaptered metadata and a tight topic give a model more to work from[^3]. For a software video, that text layer is four parts:

- A full, accurate transcript, so the spoken answer can be read
- Chapters, so each sub-answer has a labeled timestamp
- A title phrased the way the question is asked
- A description that restates the answer and links to the matching doc

YouTube chapters start at 00:00, need at least three timestamps, and run at least 10 seconds. They add context and may appear in the transcript[^4]. On YouTube, Google prioritizes key moments you set in the description over segments it guesses[^5]. In Otterly's study, timestamped citations showed up only in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, not in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity[^2]. [Why Google cites a YouTube video](https://foxcue.com/youtube-ai-overviews/why-google-cites-videos/) covers the transcript mechanics.

## Why does YouTube matter for video AEO?

YouTube is where these engines find software video most often. In BrightEdge's September 2025 snapshot, it was the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews[^6].

> **29.5%** YouTube citation share in Google AI Overviews, the most-cited domain.[^6]

Don't copy that number onto every engine. Same snapshot, YouTube's share of each engine's citations[^6]:

| Engine | YouTube citation share |
| --- | --- |
| Google AI Overviews | 29.5%, the #1 domain |
| Google AI Mode | 16.6%, the #1 domain |
| Perplexity | 9.7%, the #5 domain |
| ChatGPT | 0.2% |

Plan for Google first. ChatGPT barely cited YouTube there. YouTube's AI Overview share was down 32.8% week over week in that snapshot, and YouTube was still the top domain[^6].

## Who is video AEO for?

B2B and vertical software teams that already have docs and a help center. The questions are specific, support hears them again, and buyers ask an AI engine. The format is an [answer video](https://foxcue.com/youtube-ai-overviews/what-is-an-answer-video/): one question, said directly, on YouTube.

## How does FoxCue turn docs into videos?

FoxCue plans videos from questions in your site and Search Console, and skips what you already cover. It writes the script only from sources you approve, shows the passages it used, and can list any claim those passages don't support. HubSpot says to put the core answer in the first 40 to 60 words[^7]. Open the script that way, so a reviewer can check it against the doc.

Title, description and tags drafted from the script. You still upload the file, and add chapters in YouTube.

You record on a browser teleprompter that follows your voice. The editor cuts filler and silences, adds captions and makes a vertical copy. First shortlist:

1. List the questions support and sales hear most
2. Keep the ones your docs or help center already answer
3. Note which queries show an AI answer that cites YouTube
4. Record from that passage, with a transcript, chapters and a description linking back

## Questions

### What is a zero-click search?

A search where the person reads the AI answer and never clicks through. The citation inside that answer is the impression you still get.

### What do I need before starting video AEO?

Docs, a help center or posts your team will stand behind, plus the questions support and sales hear again. Search Console shows which already have demand. Publish on YouTube with a transcript, chapters and a description.

### Does video AEO replace video SEO?

No. A clear title, description and watch page still help the video get found. Video AEO changes the writing and the count: a quotable answer, not the most views.

### Will FoxCue get my video cited?

No one can promise that. FoxCue helps you pick the question, script it from your sources, record and edit it. Whether an engine cites the video is up to that engine.
