# What is an answer video for AI Overviews?

By Jeel Patel, Founder, FoxCue · Published 2026-10-20 · Updated 2026-10-20

An answer video is a video, usually on YouTube, that answers one specific buyer question directly, so Google's AI Overviews can show it beside the written answer or cite it as a source. What earns the slot is how precisely it answers the question, more than its length or view count.

## How do AI Overviews choose an answer video?

AI Overviews choose a video by reading what it says, and that comes mostly from the transcript. A video whose spoken words answer the searcher's exact question is far easier to match and quote than one that circles the topic.

YouTube is the usual home for these videos. It held about 29.5% of AI Overview citations in September 2025, the most of any domain[^1]. One overview can also show more than one video, so a well-targeted answer can sit beside other sources instead of having to beat all of them.

> **29.5%** of Google AI Overview citations went to YouTube, the most-cited domain.[^1]

The pattern is clearest in Google AI Overviews. Other assistants, like ChatGPT, cite YouTube far less, so don't apply Google's numbers everywhere.

## How long should an answer video be?

There is no required length. Make the video as long as the answer needs and no longer: open with the answer in the first few seconds, then explain.

Across AI engines, most cited YouTube videos are long-form[^2]. That says full answers get cited more than Shorts, not that longer is better.

| Share of AI-cited YouTube videos | Share |
| --- | --- |
| Long-form | 94% |
| Shorts | 6% |

## How is an answer video built?

One question, one page, one video. The pages that get cited tend to share this shape:

1. The question as the headline, in the words people search
2. A 40 to 60 word written answer under it
3. The video, opening with that same answer
4. Chapters phrased as the follow-up questions
5. The full transcript below the video
6. VideoObject markup so search engines know what it covers

The written answer and the spoken answer should say the same thing. Whichever one the AI reads, it finds the same claim.

## How do answer videos relate to AEO?

Answer videos are one format within AEO (answer engine optimization), the practice of shaping content so AI answer engines can pull it into their responses. You may also see them called AEO videos.

For software companies, the best raw material is usually what you've already written: product docs, help articles and blog posts. They're the most accurate account of how the product works, so they make the most trustworthy scripts.

## How FoxCue makes answer videos

FoxCue suggests the buyer questions worth a video from your site and Search Console, and skips what you've already covered. It writes the script only from the sources you approve, shows you the passages it used, and can list any claim those passages don't support.

Each script made from a topic plan carries an answer brief: the question and what the video must answer.

You record on a browser teleprompter that follows your voice, then edit with an AI editor that cuts filler and silences, adds captions and makes a vertical copy. FieldCamp, a field-service software company, is our [public customer-zero test](https://foxcue.com/customers/fieldcamp/).

## Other ways to make answer videos

The approaches differ mainly in where the answers come from and what they ask of your team.

| | From your docs (FoxCue) | Expert interviews | Sales-call questions |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Starts from | Your site, docs and notes | Staff and customer interviews | Recorded sales calls |
| Questions from | Search Console and your site | Your experts | Buyer objections |
| Your team gives | A person on camera | Filming time per expert | Access to call recordings |

## Questions

### What are AI Overviews on Google Search?

Google's AI-written answers at the top of some searches. Beside the answer they can show or cite outside sources, including YouTube videos, sometimes several in one overview.

### Who should invest in answer videos?

B2B and vertical software companies that already have accurate written knowledge, like docs, help articles and blog posts, and buyers who ask specific questions before they buy.

### How do I make my first answer video quickly?

Pick one question people already search for. Write a 40 to 60 word answer, record a video that opens with it, then publish it on YouTube and on a page headed by the question, with the transcript.

### Will FoxCue get my video cited?

No one can promise that. FoxCue helps you pick the question, script it from your sources, record and edit it. Whether Google cites it is up to Google.
