# What makes Google cite a YouTube video in AI Overviews?

By Jeel Patel, Founder, FoxCue · Published 2026-10-20 · Updated 2026-10-20

Google cites YouTube because it owns YouTube and indexes its transcripts, captions and descriptions, so a spoken answer can be matched and quoted like text. Video also shows a process that a page can only describe. What decides which video gets cited is structure, not popularity.

## Does Google owning YouTube explain it?

Partly. YouTube is a Google property, and its videos sit in the same index Google Search uses, which is the index AI Overviews draw from[^2]. Google doesn't have to fetch them from anywhere else.

The result is that YouTube is cited more than any other domain in AI Overviews[^1]. But ownership explains why YouTube is in the running. It doesn't explain why one video is cited and another isn't.

> **29.5%** of Google AI Overview citations went to YouTube, more than any other domain.[^1]

## Google reads the words, not the pictures

AI engines can't watch a video yet[^3]. What they match and quote is the text attached to it: the transcript or captions, the chapters, the title and the description.

Google has said captions help it understand what a video is about, and AI Overviews rely on the same index that holds them[^2]. People also speak the way they ask questions, so a spoken answer often lines up with the query more closely than polished copy.

## Chapters point the answer at a moment

Half of the queries that cite a YouTube URL in AI Overviews point to a specific timestamp inside the video, not the whole thing[^3]. Chapters split a long video into answers Google can link to one by one.

Timestamped citations showed up only in Google's surfaces: AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity didn't cite a single timestamp in the same study window[^4].

1. Upload your own transcript instead of relying on auto-captions
2. Add chapters, each named as the question it answers
3. Write a full description, not one line
4. Title the video as the question people search

## Structure beats popularity

Across cited videos, views, likes and subscriber counts had almost no relationship with how often a video was cited. Description length had the strongest[^4]:

| Signal | Correlation with citations |
| --- | --- |
| Description length | 0.31 |
| Hashtags in description | 0.20 |
| Video views | −0.03 |
| Channel subscribers | −0.03 |
| Video likes | −0.02 |

Most cited videos are also long-form, not Shorts. A full answer with room for chapters gives Google more to quote.

| Share of AI-cited YouTube videos | Share |
| --- | --- |
| Long-form | 94% |
| Shorts | 6% |

## Which queries pull YouTube in?

Instructional and visual queries, mostly. Where the answer is something you need to see, a video fits[^5]:

| Query type | Why a video fits |
| --- | --- |
| How-to | Shows each step instead of describing it |
| Visual demonstrations | Proves a process works as described |
| Examples | Shows a real instance, like an unboxing |
| News | Brings footage and spoken reporting |

For software, that's the "how do I…" questions about your product category: setting something up, connecting a tool, fixing an error.

## What the data doesn't prove

- Correlation isn't cause. A long description goes with more citations; it doesn't promise one.
- The study only looked at videos that were already cited, so it explains repeat citations, not how a video gets in the first time[^4].
- A citation doesn't mean the video was used to write the answer. It may sit beside an answer drawn from elsewhere[^6].
- Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews[^7]. The signals above describe what gets cited, not a checklist Google asks for.

## Where FoxCue fits

FoxCue plans each video from questions your buyers already search in Search Console, writes the script only from your approved sources, and records you on a teleprompter, so the spoken answer matches the question.

Export a caption file (.srt) to upload to YouTube as your own transcript, instead of auto-captions.

It also drafts the title, description and tags from the script. Chapters you add in YouTube yourself for now. See [what an answer video is](https://foxcue.com/youtube-ai-overviews/what-is-an-answer-video/) for the full page-and-video shape.

## Questions

### Does Google require special optimization for AI Overviews?

Google says AI Overviews add no requirements beyond its normal search guidance. The structure above (your own transcript, chapters, a full description) is what the citation data favours.

### Do views or subscribers help a video get cited?

Barely. In OtterlyAI's study, views, likes and subscribers had near-zero correlation with citations. Description length had the strongest.

### Do other AI engines cite YouTube the same way?

No. Timestamped citations showed up only in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and engines like ChatGPT cite YouTube far less than Google does.
